Thoughts From My Porch

Sitting out on our back porch, enjoying the beautiful, but hot weather, I am enjoying the majesty of another gorgeous Florida afternoon. The only sounds are from the waterfall in the small pool next to us, and the otherwise complete quiet that surrounds us fills us with peace and comfort.

I said goodbye to the bustle of the large cities I had lived in my entire adult life that were necessary in order to provide the environment I needed to earn a living as a classical musician, and have since been enjoying the music of silence. This may be difficult for hobby musicians or general music lovers to understand, but I think most, if not all of you can relate to the need for peace and quiet, after a long life of hard work; space to reflect on the past; time, and a sense of calm to think about future leisure and endeavors.

On this balmy afternoon on the 4th of July, my reveries have been more than once interrupted by the thoughts of next year’s 4th - the sounds of a marching band, a P.A. system blaring out the voice of an excited announcer after a completed Hail Mary pass, and then later at night the second sports event, complete with stadium lighting turning our night into a false dawn.

My gentle musings and reveries temporarily interrupted, I thought I would take a few minutes to write to any of you who might come to our website today, or in the next few days, and share this scenario with you, before it’s too late to avoid it.

Nobody likes to be constantly harangued to donate to a cause, regardless of its merit. I understand, for I too, wonder how much good it does one or the other of my favorite charities when I, along with thousands of others, think about permanently relinquishing these e-mails to the spam folder rather than erase them one at a time, three or four times weekly.

That’s why I’m simply posting on our website today. I have no news to report, and if you’ve already become tired of my efforts to entice you to donate, then you’ve probably not even read this far.

If my words today have meant anything to you, and you haven’t yet donated to our cause, please consider doing so, because we need your help and support. If you have already donated, please consider doing so again, because although we are experiencing a great uptick in donations, we still have not reached our goal.

I wish you all a pleasant and enjoyable 4th of July.
